The 1960's

It was in this decade that games started to be televised, which revolutionized the way people watched the game. Finally, it was possible to witness every goal from your own home - if you could afford a TV. Otherwise, you could stand outside an electronics shop window and watch the game there instead, as many people did. Television catapulted the sports popularity higher - people could finally see their favorite stars  on this new medium instead of only seeing them play in person. FIFA's membership also grew. By now, 140 countries were members of the organisation, compared to 54 in the previous decade. Football came home in the 1960's, with England finally winning the World Cup after a long period of self-imposed isolation and restructuring from their 1950's shame. Red and yellow cards and substitutes were introduced, meaning players no longer had to keep playing with broken necks and the like, although, in England at least, they could only be carried out in the case of injury. The rules were later relaxed to allow for tactical subs.
